5k Start line“Step Up for a Child” 5K Efforts Stepped Up This Year! CASA for Children of Monmouth County and members from the Jersey Shore Running Club recently teamed up for CASA’s annual 5K race and fun walk and raised over $10,000! On Sunday, July 31, 2011 runners and walkers alike took a scenic run or stroll through Joe Palaia Park in Ocean Township. The event featured fun-filled activities such as adult and kids’ races, giveaways, airbrushing, and games.

This year, CASA remembers our volunteer Mike Campion, who was dedicated to his family and local community. Not only did he serve in the NJ National Guard and act as a member of the Millstone Elks, Knights of Columbus, the Men’s Guild and the Church Choir, he also served as an exceptional volunteer for CASA. We thank his family and friends for allowing us to honor his memory at our event.

The race went off without a hitch thanks to our dedicated Race Director, Matthew Shafer. Matt, along with our volunteers on the 5k committee, secured donations from numerous vendors for snacks and beverages. CASA would also like to express our appreciation to all runners and walkers, donors from our First Giving page, volunteers, and sponsors- Ernst & Young, RBC Wealth Management, Mrs. Myrna Campion, Alliance Oral Surgery, Active Release & Chiropractic Center, Wegmans, the Breeze.
Results: Keith Witthauer of Apple Valley, California was the first runner to break through the finish-line tape in a time of 17:53 to finish first place overall. He was followed by Dan Rosenblatt of Oakhurst in 18:04 and then Scott Linnell of Colts Neck in 19:13.

For women, Tara Gangi of Manalapan finished first in a time of 20:10. She was followed by Kristen McGuire of Avon in 21:43 and then Jennifer Duffy of Oakhurst in 22:24.
